Crammer's Corner: Avoiding formulaic consulting in the CSA

In this short article, I'll be giving some advice that might help you in the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) but, paradoxically, the main thrust of my advice is that there aren't any magical tips and tricks I can pass on to you! My advice is simple; learn to be a good doctor and stop worrying so much about what the examiners are looking for. Many trainees turn up to the exam preoccupied with checking ideas, concerns and expectations, summarizing, looking for hidden agendas and checking understanding -not that these aren't important but all too often this preoccupation gets in the way of effective consulting.
