But it's at this end where things are compelling. Neither car is new. Renault's latest 275 Trophy Meganes have not yet arrived in the UK, but we are happy to make do with a 265 Cup because, to most of our minds, it is still the front-drive performance benchmark of today. The Fiesta, however, counters with the fact that instead of a £28,280 price, it costs under £20,000, even with a Mountune kit. And, of course, it does what fast Fords currently do: it feels like its pivot point is set somewhere around the gearlever, so it's deliciously agile, and although its body falls quite quickly on to its chosen lean angle, from that point onwards it displays an astonishing willingness to be unaffected by mid-corner bumps and lumps. If it were only to steer a little more sweetly, what things could become this car. The rack is accurate and there's a modicum of feel, but really any traces of feedback are nuanced at best. Still, at least the engine response is fizzy and the gearshift sharp.
