A study on mitochondrial DNA was carried out in three localities of Odisha to elucidate the origin and genetic diversity of goat genetic resources of this region. Out of the 94 samples, 42 samples were selected for partial D-loop sequence of 783 bp belonging to these goat populations. The D loop region was found to be highly polymorphic having 70 polymorphic sites with 21 singleton variable sites and 41 parsimony informative sites. In total 25 haplotype groups were identified. A variation of 15.85% was observed among population but within population variation was 84.15%. The Neighbor-Joining tree analysis revealed that goat population of Similipal formed a separate cluster from the other two local goat population of Odisha. The wild goat form a separate cluster from the rest of the three goat population of Odisha and four registered breed of India. In median joining tree analysis, it was found that all the individuals were evolved independently that may be due to distinct geographical locations.
