Each year, about a million tonnes of zinc alloy die-castings are manufactured world wide for products as diverse as door handles, locks, model cars, electronic components and industrial parts. The demand for chrome plating on zinc die-castings has declined somewhat, yet the demand for high quality surface and low internal porosity is greater than ever. Each year, the selling price of zinc based die-castings continues to decrease, leaving die-casting companies with declining profit margins. However, just as things are getting tougher, a new technology has emerged which gives zinc alloy die-casters the opportunity to improve their competitive position. his new hot sprue technology has been developed by Hotflo Die-casting Pty Ltd and is quickly gaining customers worldwide. It starts with the idea that was poineered in the plastic moulding industry about 30 years ago, to keep the material in the sprue in the method state at all times.But the properties of thermoplastics and zinc alloys are vastly different and so extensive research, development and testing have been required to achieve a practical working system for die-casting.
