One of the biggest strategic challenges for farm business operators in Australia is making sense of farmland prices. It often seems that farmland prices bear little resemblance to the income-generating potential of the land. New entrants to farming orfarmers looking to expand invariably face what seem to be relatively high prices in comparison with potential earning capacity. On the other hand, there never seems to be a shortage of people wanting to buy farmland, and they're prepared to pay good money for it. During recent times there has also been quite a deal of corporate and finance sector investment in agriculture, with a number of major institutions currently proposing some quite large investments in the sector.
