It's been talked about and trialled for a long time, but value-based marketing using VIAscan technology is re-emerging as a means for improving profitability of beef and lamb production. As Cindy Benjamin found out, the era of high sheep meat prices has awakened considerable processor interest here and overseas. In the beef sector, processor interest is not as strong, but Woolworths is using it for supplier compliance analysis. Value-based payments to beef and lamb producers are emerging as more processors install components of the VIAscan system and reward growers for supplying high-yielding, high-eating-quality animals.
