It is often said the only knowledge of law many people possess is that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Clearly this does not mean people are presumed to know the law in its entirety. Rather, it means the prosecution is only required to prove the requisite elements of an offence. It is irrelevant whether the accused person is aware of those elements. But, what if people go out of their way to avoid being ignorant of the law by seeking help, but are given the wrong advice? And what if that advice comes from the responsible government authority?
