REPORT ON THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL YOUNG GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS CONFERENCE

Each year around the world the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Ground Engineering (ISSMGE), in conjunction with local geotechnical societies, hosts regional conferences for young geotechnical engineers. In Australia and New Zealand these conferences have been held since 1994, with the most recent held in Perth, Western Australia in February 2000. To mark the millenium, the British Geotechnical Society (BGS) in conjunction with the Geotechnical Research Group and Southampton University hosted the first International Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference. Young engineers were invited from around the globe, with roughly 100 delegates from 55 different countries attending the conference, making this a truly international event. This diversity guaranteed a good spread of experience and interests, and ensured that topics of conversation were always interesting, and often controversial.
