摘要

In the hours immediately after post-tropical storm Arthur passed through New Brunswick on July 5, a text message from our daughter described Fredericton as a "tree graveyard." Don Murray, the city forester, said he had "never seen anything like it before," and hoped he never would again.Although paling in comparison to the devastation of hurricane Juan in 2003 and the Christmas Mountains blowdown of 1995, Arthur knocked down more trees in the provincial capital than any storm on record. A final count of lost or damaged trees is still not available, but in the early days after the storm Murray estimated at least 4,000city-owned trees had been affected. That included only those growing along Fredericton' s extensive trail network, or planted as street and ornamental trees; it did not count those in large parks such as Odell and Killarney Lake.
