The Sun sets on Sir Bernard Lovell

With the passing of Bernard Lovell, the world has lost one of the great astronomy pioneers of the last century. He was born on 13 August 1913 in the village of Oldland Common, Gloucestershire where the family life largely involved their church and playing for the village cricket team. This upbringing greatly influenced him as he remained an ardent churchgoer - playing the organ for the church in the village of Swettenham - and as captain of his local cricket team. Having studied Physics at the University of Bristol he took a doctorate there and became an assistant lecturer studying cosmic rays at the University of Manchester.
