OBITUARY: SIR BERNARD LOVELL

The creator of the UK's largest radio telescope, Sir Bernard Lovell, has died at the age of 98. Sir Lovell developed the science of radio-astronomy in the UK and was director of Jodrell Bank, the site of the radio telescope which was renamed the Lovell Telescope in his honour in 1987. The telescope has enabled scientists to study previously inaccessible parts of the Universe which are millions of light years away, providing greater understanding about stellar activity and the Universe as a whole - including its origins.
