Singapore's Jurong Shipyard set a new rig construction benchmark recently when it skidded the 14,000t upper hull of GlobalSantaFe's newbuild semi-submersible Development Driller 1, over the lower hull. Given the scale of this exercise, Jurong, a SembCorp Marine subsidiary, developed innovative construction mthodology which saw the rig's upper and lower hulls built simultaneously in two halves, rather than employing the traditional method of installation by small sub-blocks onto the lower hull while afloat using floating cranes.
