EPA to exempt generators from Superfund rules

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it will not make electric power plant operators prove they can pay for environmental accidents. The agency said yesterday it is proposing exempting the industry from financial reporting requirements under the Com- prehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liabil- ity Act (CERCLA), also known as the Superfund law. EPA said electric utilities' general financial health, industry practices and state and federal regulations are enough to show that the industry can cover damage from hazardous spills.
