This unique and innovative development was funded by NASA and has been shown to reduce levels of airborne microorganisms, allergens and other organic materials. The system represents a new generation in air quality management, combining for the firsttime, the dual roles of Ultra-Violet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) and Photo-Catalytic Oxidation (PCO); both of these processes are scientifically acknowledged to reduce airborne contamination. Contaminated air is drawn into the system by a fan. It passes over the catalyst bed where it is immobilized on the TiO_2 catalyst. UVGI irradiation on the catalyst produces a 'mist' of hydroxyl radicals and super-oxide ions that oxidise the organic bonds within the organic matter adsorbed on the catalyst and break it down to C02 and H_2O vapour. The technology will significantly reduce organism numbers with a single passage through the PCO + UVGI oxidation process, but since it is designed for constant operation a significant and sustained reduction in airborneorganism numbers is recorded.
