VERY few feedlots in the world can boast to have ocean-front views. But at Five Star Beef at Ashburton, south of Christchurch in New Zealand, the sparkling Pacific Ocean is the backdrop to that country's only major commercial beef feedlot. Many of the challenges facing Five Star, such as rising input costs, are similar to those seen in the Australian feedlot industry. But the NZ business must also contend try for grain and competing with a domestic market oriented heavily towards grassfed beef.
