In The Blue Rose, a novel by Anthony Eglin, an unnamed hybridizer crosses a rose with another unnamed plant to produce a true blue rose, but with poisonous thorns. While real-life hybridizers have achieved neither of these qualities, they are constantly expanding the breeding gamut in an effort to come up with new, and hopefully better, plants and roses. Much of this effort revolves around introducing various species roses into breeding lines. The late Ralph Moore was noted for his use of various species over the years, while other examples would include Len Scrivens' inclusion of R davida elongata in creating the extremely disease resistant 'Baby Love', or Tom Carruth's employing a derivative of R soulieana in the breeding of his family of purple roses - 'Night Owl', 'Ebb Tide', etc.
