"A plant in a tray" is the most simple literal translation of the word bonsai, and, according to earliest accounts, the Chinese are credited with being the first to begin transplanting naturally dwarfed trees from mountainsides and cliff tops into orn amental containers. The Chinese may have been the first to appreciate the weird, twisted beauty of these trees in their own homes and gardens, but it took the Japanese to raise this interest to an art form, and they have since been responsible for perfec ting the cultivation of bonsai trees.
