Application and composting conditions of coffee grounds. 1. Application of coffee grounds in soil.

The agricultural utilization of coffee grounds was examined. The results showed: (1) application of coffee grounds in soils inhibited the seedling growth of Chinese mustard (Brassica juncea). From experiments on nitrogen and toxic substance alleviation, it was suggested that this inhibition is due to nitrogen starvation and the presence of toxic substances. However, in summer, when 2.5 kg/m2 of coffee grounds was applied together with nitrogen fertilizer at 15 to 20 g/m2, coffee grounds did not inhibit the seedling growth of Chinese mustard with a maturing period of more than one month; and (2) when more than 10 kg/m2 of coffee grounds was applied into soil, soil aggregates were developed.
