The effects of spraying and sprinkling 13 to 16 deg C fresh water every other day on the hatchability and egg weight losses during 26 days of incubation were investigated in 1196 eggs containing 175 infertile eggs of Aigamo ducks, crossbred between wild and domestic varieties.The hatchability of fertile eggs for non-water treated control, fresh water sprayed and fresh water sprinkled eggs were 59.2 percent (203/343), 73.5 percent (249/339) and 76.7 (260/339), respectively. Results indicaate significantly higher hatchability of sprayed and sprinkled over control eggs (P<0.01). Duckling weights at hatching to the egg weight on the day laid and of egg weight at day 0 of incubation were approximately 67 percent, 68 percent, respectively.The percentages of duckling weights at hatching to egg weight on the day laid and to egg weight at day 0 of incubation were ranged between 66.94 percent to 67.11 percent, and 67.55 percent to 67.72 percent respectively. These results are consistent with Rahn's report in 1981 that poult weight at hatching should be approximately 67 percent of the initial egg mass.The percentages of egg weight losses in hatched eggs were 12.53+-0.31 percent (n=56), 11.41+-0.35 percent (n=71), 12.21+-0.30 percent(n=84) for non treated control, sprayed and sprinkled eggs, respectively. No significant difference in the percentages was found among the three treatments. Regardless of the treatment, hatched eggs (13.28+-0.1 percent, n=535) lost more weight than eggs with embryo mortality (11.53+-0.25 percent, n=264) (P<0.01), and eggs with embryo mortality lost more weight than infertile eggs (10.26+-0.33 percent, n=137)(P<0.01). This suggests that about 13 percent loss in initial egg weight resulted in improved hatchability as well as good duckling livability.
