Phyllanthus amarus Schum.& Thonn., a member of Euphorbiaceae has gained prominence due to its activity in curing jaundice caused by Hepatitis B-virus. This plant needs to be cultivated for its growth, biomass and seed yield. Experiments were conductedconsecutively for four years from 1998- 2002 at Botany Field Research Laboratory, Maduravoyal, Chennai, wherein, application of varied biofertilizers [Farmyard Manure (FYM), Vermicompost, combination of Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria alone and with FYM] were treated at different regimes to standardize their optimal requirement. The results revealed that the Farmyard Manure remarkably enhanced the growth of plants in terms of all the parameters investigated. It was followed by combined effects of biofertilizers namely Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria with positive influence of Farmyard Manure than vermicompost alone and finally to the least but better growth with the combination of Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria over the control.
