Walcheren, a desolate marshy island in the Scheldt estuary near the Netherlands/Belgium border, was the scene of a military and medical disaster in 1809. The Walcheren campaign comprised the British army's largest expeditionary force to date: 40,000 men under the command of the Earl of Chatham (1756-1835). The Walcheren fever that struck the British troops within a few weeks, described an assortment of malaria, typhoid, typhus and dysentery.
