Fatty Acid Composition Analysis of Peony Seed Oil at Different Altitudes and Areas

In this experiment Soxhlet extraction was used to extract the peony seed oil at different altitudes and areas, and the oil yields were calculated. Then the fatty acid composition at different altitudes and areas in Heze Shandong and Leshan Sichuan was measured and analyzed with thegas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that, the oil contents in those places were above 20%. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that peony seed oil consisted of hexadecane carbon-acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, oleic acid, twenty carbon-acid and other unsaturatedfatty acids, linolenic acid content is the highest, followed by linoleic acid. For the contents of unsaturated fatty acids, there is no significant difference between the samples from Heze Shandong and Leshan Sichuan. However, at the three different planting areas in Leshan Sichuan, the relativeamounts of unsaturated fatty acids will increase with the altitude rising. At an altitude of 760 m, relative content of unsaturated fatty acids was up to 90.33%. This study not only provides a reference to the preliminary evaluation of the peony seed oil quality at different altitudes in southChina, but also provides a technical guidance for the peony planting at different altitudes in south China.
