We can only think from within our time-space cocoons, a constraint that hinders understanding of predecessors. However, looking back across wide generational gaps may vouchsafe us enough hindsight to bridge past with present. In spite of that, what our predecessors did may still seem unethical to us now, as might what we are doing now seem unethical to those who will succeed us. I was an intern in 1970 when Dr. Blackpill died. None of our professors went to his funeral, but my father and his friend, Dr. Elias, did. They were medical students when Dr. Blackpill was in his prime and both had apprenticed with him during their third year, in 1942. Having travelled far to come to his funeral, they dropped by my hospital as I was getting off my shift.
