Europe is losing the tug of war with Asia for scant Mideast and Asian jet supplies as the coldest Northeast Asian temperatures in decades continues to divert huge volumes of dual-use aviation fuel into the region's kerosene-based heating market. Asian jet premiums spiked to an almost 10-year high of $2.28 per barrel over benchmark Singapore quotes on Feb. 27 with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) forecasting frigid temperatures to last into early March. JMA records show Japan suffering the coldest winter since 1979. European jet traders have watched open-mouthed in recent weeks as normally mainstay tankers from the Middle East have diverted to Asia. Tanker trackers reckon European jet fuel imports will hit a two-year low of barely 1 million tons (7.88 million barrels) in March, after a quiet start to the year, which also saw Mideast tankers bypass Europe for the US. Saudi Arabian jet fuel is even rumored to be heading to Australia with the 112,000 deadweight metric ton Lady Henrietta picking up 75,000 tons of jet from Jubail last week. Shipbrokers say Singapore trader Caltex's Australian subsidiary Ampol has fixed the ship which is currently signaling Australia's Botany Bay.
