Strong passenger flows in Europe and the US lifted global jet fuel demand in April. An uptick in major industrial- ized countries boosted consumption to 3.7 million barrels per day, a 5.6% gain from year-earlier rates and more than twice the 2.2% rate of growth in the first quarter. Germany led the revival as Lufthansa and other smaller carriers took over the slots vacated by Air Berlin, which went bankrupt in late 2017. That boosted usage in the four largest European markets by 7.3%, even though Italy and the UK showed weak- ness. Demand in the US surged by 7% as airlines added capacity to accommo- date higher passenger traffic.
