As with any technology, blasting is in a continuous state of development. New concepts are being introduced that make bulk excavation safer and more cost-effective. In this context conferences play a key role in ensuring that information is disseminated in a timely and reliable way, and this year's lixplo'2001 meeting in Australia's coal heartland of the Hunter Valley will undoubtedly be no exception. With a theme entitled "Blasting: Techniques and Technology - Today and Tomorrow's", the conference has been designed to provide a forum for discussion on the implications of the latest blasting and explosives technologies on mining and processing operations.True to its location, the conference, the fourth in the Explo' series, includes presentations based on experience in the coal-mining environment as well as in other areas of mining and minerals production. Topics for coal-orientated papers already confirmed include a report on the use of blasting during the recovery of the Oaky Creek longwall in Queensland, optimising coal recovery from resources close to the Hunter River, and a comparison between free digging and blasting assistance at the Lemington mine, also in the Hunter Valley Scheduled to take place between 28 October and 2 November, Explo'2001 is being organised by the AusIMM.Whether used for waste movement or for coal production, blasting plays a key role in today's coal industry Explosives and accessories suppliers are continuing to snake significant advances in the technology available.
