The gear - second only to the machine screw in numbers - is perhaps the most ubiquitous of complex, single-piece human creations that we surround ourselves with or wear on our persons on a daily basis. Concealed in the multitude of mechanical timepieces, gears dutifully toil away, unnoticed and unconsidered when the mechanism is consulted for the time of day.
