After an absence of more than 20 years, Volkswagen is returning to the purpose-built pick-up market with the launch of the Amarok. The name means wolf in the Inuit language, and VW reckons that its latest offering is just as tough and capable on and off-road as a whole pack of wolves. The Amarok will arrive in UK dealerships in four-door, five-seater double-cab 4×4 guise in September. Next year will see the debut on this side of the Channel of a two-door single-cab with both two and four-wheel drive. There's a choice of two diesel engines: a 163bhp 2.0-litre unit with two-stage turbocharging and a cooler 122bhp 2.0-litre. Both engines are mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and a petrol alternative is not available.
