Following Volkswagen Motorsport's new outright Pikes Peak record, Chris Eyre recalls that twin engines are nothing new and charts the five-generation history that came so close to trumping the iconic Audi quattro. Its recent assault on the daunting Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with the record-breaking Volkswagen I.D. R is not the first time that Volkswagen has undertaken this huge challenge, although it is undoubtedly the most successful. It is also not the first time that Volkswagen has adopted a dual powerplant approach to providing the necessary performance.
