US president Donald Trump’s administration is citing information supplied by Israel on Tehran’s past nuclear programme as validation of its decision to force revisions to the Iran nuclear deal. At stake is a possible reimposition of US sanctions that penalise foreign buyers of Iranian crude and oil products. Trump has vowed to leave the Joint Compre- hensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), unless European powers can convince Tehran to renegotiate the pact by 12 May. Documentation presented by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a 30 April television appearance seems authen- tic, secretary of state Mike Pompeo says. But US experts are still reviewing it. Tehran, which denies having pursued nuclear weapons, calls Netanyahu’s claim a “rehash of old allegations”.
