Results from a large study of weight-loss diets found that any reduced-calorie program will lead to clinically significant weight loss, regardless if the diet emphasizes protein, fat, or carbohydrate restriction. Weight change was followed for 2 years in more than 800 overweight adults who were assigned to one of four diets with varying percentages of fat, protein, and carbohydrate: 20%, 15%, and 65%; 20%, 25%, and 55%; 40%, 15%, and 45%; and 40%, 25%, and 35%. The study did not identify any of the diets with existing commercially branded weight-loss programs. In addition to the prescribed diet, participants were asked to attend group and individual instructional sessions.
