Regulators have allowed Husky Energy Inc.(Husky)to restart operations at its White Rose oil field off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador(Canada)two months after operations were shut down due to an oil spill(see OSIR,11 December 2018).The spill occurred during a storm and rough seas caused the oil to dissipate. The spill was the largest in the Provinces’history. The SeaRose floating production, storage, and offloading vessel spilled approximately 1,571 barrels(66,000 gallons)of oil on 16 November 2018 about 350 kilometers(217 miles)southeast of St.John's,Newfoundland.Two months after the spill, the Canada Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board approved Husky's plan to plug the failed flow-line connector and restart operations.Conditions for the restart include beginning operations in a section of the field apart from the spill zone, limiting operations to daylight hours, conducting aerial and vessel surveillance of operations, including having operational and wildlife observers on board vessels, and monitoring onshore activities closely.
