The method involves coupling circuits (C1, C2) during an operation phase of a thermal engine (10). The circuits are decoupled such that an alternator-starter (5) stores a quantity of electrical energy by charging a condenser (2) at time of a preparation phase of stopping of the engine, where decoupling is intervened when a stopping or restarting condition of the engine is realized. A portion of electric energy stored by discharging the condenser is utilized by the alternator-starter at the time of a restarting phase of the engine. An independent claim is also included for an automatic stopping and restarting system of a thermal engine.
