Intercultural, modalities of reading present significant challenges, as well as opportunities, for both the librarian and the Reading instructor. Reading, as an activity, is a social construct based on the peculiarities of each language. Even when the question of the student's first language is not an issue, there are still further cultural constructs that need to be taken into account if the library and the Reading classroom are to be effective.
