It's Not What Happens to a Person

Several years ago I attended a meeting and listened to a wise, experienced, older gentleman share about his life. He taught many valuable lessons throughout his presentation, basing everything he spoke of on facts presented. One truth he shared has become quite valuable to my daily walk inside and out of the workplace. He stated: "It's not what happens to a man, but what he does when it happens, that counts." I quickly wrote down that statement and remind myself daily of its truth. You see, each day we are faced with challenges and choices. How we react can have an effect on the lives of others. Take for instance a driver who has an argument with his spouse before leaving home. What that driver does with his emotion while behind the wheel can affect others on the road. So it's not necessarily what happens to a person, but how that person responds that can cause unintended consequences.
