For nearly 50 years, tribology has been cited as a source of large, potential energy savings. The study which started it all was the Jost Report (1966), which contended that huge sums of money were lost in the UK annually due to the consequences of friction, wear and corrosion. Other subsequent studies have made a similar connection between the application of tribological principles and significant economic benefits. One estimated that direct and consequential annual loss to industries in the United States due to wear is approximately 1 -2 percent of GDP. Another speculated that approximately one-third of all device-produced energy is lost through friction and wear.
