US thermal coal exports tumble

US coal exports fell sharply in the frst half of 2019 compared with a year earlier, with weaker demand from South Korea as nuclear plants resumed operations and limited opportunities in the Atlantic basin. US thermal coal shipments declined to 19.41mn t in January- June from 23.76mn t during the same period last year, the lat- est export data released by the US Census Bureau show. Load- ings in June fell by more than 40pc on the year to 2.49mn t.
