摘要

Late last year, the Australian Government made reducing food waste its official priority. Matthews' Mark Dingley explores whether this means change is coming for food labelling.Food waste is an issue on several fronts, with economic, social and environmental implications. For the latter, the problem is both carbon dioxide emissions from the wasted food as well as wasted inputs in industries with low margins, such as dairy.Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) figures put global carbon dioxide emissions from food waste as the highest in Australia, New Zealand, the US and Canada. These same figures estimate the most consumer waste to be in cereals, followed by fruit and veggies, with dairy third. When looking at production losses, dairy comes in at fifth out of seven, behind fish, oil crops and pulses, roots and tubers, and meat.
