The Mediating Effect of Leadership on Organizational Policy and Whistleblowing Intention: Evidence from Malaysian GLCs

Ethical practices are paramount and expected by stakeholders of an organization either in private or public sector. Good leadership and an honest working culture provide a healthy working environment in which individuals in the organization may work comfortably as it reflects the organization’soverall wellbeing. Whistleblowing practice is deemed important to every organization as it serves as a preliminary step in exposing any possible illegal and unethical practices in the organization. This paper attempts to discover whether organizational policy with the leadership as a mediatorhas an impact on whistleblowing intention, particularly to government-linked companies (GLCs) in Malaysia. A survey in a form of questionnaire was distributed to seven Malaysian GLCs resulted in a total of 100 respondents. The findings revealed that organizational policy and leadership havea significant and positive influence in triggering whistleblowing intention among employees. The findings of this study are anticipated to assist policymakers and practitioners in strengthening their efforts to encourage whistleblowing intention in the organization. The limitations of thisstudy and suggestion for future research are also presented.
