The Role of the Architect as an Educator in Design Education Towards the Development of a Sustainable Society: A Case Study of Hajeedar

Architect is an important profession that contributes to the development of the construction industry as well as infrastructure growth in the country. In realizing the role of professionals to ensure the production of quality human capital, there is a need for an interface between theinvolvement of the industry with the higher learning institution. This is vital to expose and train graduates to be more competent individuals equipped to contribute on both the local and global scales. The purpose of this paper is to explore industrial practice by referring to the works andinvolvement of a prominent local architect, Dato’ Ar. Hajeedar, on how he played his role as educator, designer and architect in disseminating his knowledge towards the development of society and sustainable built environment. The contribution of Dato’ Ar. Hajeedar’s ideologythrough his prominent works will define his involvement in both the industry and higher learning institutions to promote a design course that benefits the industry and education sector. This is made possible by the data collection via semiotic method of in-depth interviews and observationas the main methodology rooted from the interpretivist paradigm. The interview questions touched on four main aspects: his ideology, principle, involvement, and contribution. Based on the data collected, this paper aims to establish a framework on how the architect’s role as an educatorand industrial player contributes to the promotion of a sustainable environment for the benefit of communal development.
