Translation, Cross-Cultural Adaptation, Reliability and Validity of the Malay Version Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) for Caregivers of Individuals with Mental Illness

Most instruments to measure burden were developed in Western countries and concern was about the ability of this instrument to capture the experience from other cultures. Thus, the purposes of this study were to generate a valid and reliable translation of the Caregiver Burden Inventory(CBI) into the Malay language and to examine the validity and reliability of the scale. The process of questionnaire translation from English into the Malaysian language followed the standard guidelines. The CBI was completed twice at two weeks interval. Cronbach’s alpha value was usedto assess the internal consistency of the scale and test-retest was analyzed using the intraclass correlation coefficient. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the original 5-factor model. The finding showed that the Malay version of CBI was reliable. All items loaded significantlyonto their respective factors and the standardized factor loadings were high. In conclusion, the Malay version of the CBI is a valid and reliable tool to measure caregiver burden in Malay speaking population.
