A commercially practical process was developed for the extraction and purification of the lignan secoisolariciresinol diglucoside L. usitatissimum seed meal. A simple reversed phase HPLC method was developed which yielded 10-15 g of 99% pure secoisolariciresinol diglucoside for every kg of seed meal extracted. The 99% pure secoisolariciresinol diglucoside was fed (15 mg/kg) to rabbits on a high cholesterol (1%) diet for a period of 8 weeks. Blood lipid profiles were obtained at 0, 4 and 8 weeks. Treatment with secoisolariciresinol diglucoside reduced serum total cholesterol by 33% and reduced atherosclerotic plaques by 73% in rabbits on a high cholesterol diet.
