Stabilized zirconia/Al coatings were fabricated on a polymer substrate via plasma spraying. Thermal shock resistance and thermal oxidation resistance of the specimens at different temperatures were evaluated. Due to the increased interface stress and substrate oxidation, the coating lifetime reduced with increasing temperature. The Al-YSZ coatings provided good oxidation resistance, the weight loss and weight loss rate of the specimens decreased greatly and the service lifetimes were prolonged. After oxidation at 673 K or 723 K, the coatings exhibited a clean interface bonding without visible defects, while the weight loss was primarily attributed to oxygen penetration and heat transfer.
