Oil futures settled lower amid subdued trading volumes on the first business day of the new year despite a late-session rally that saw US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) close almost flat. Technical analysts said that oil traders were consolidating positions, but added that the commodity’s outlook remains skewed to the upside.
