摘要

Oud is not for the faint of heart. The rare and mysterious (and extremely heady) essential oil derived from the resin of the Asian Aquilaria tree has been cropping up more and more in fragrances of late, and not just those of the niche variety. It's warm, complex and woody, with an animalistic bent reminiscent of such notes as ambergris. It's a note that would have done well in the '80s, had the Western world caught wind of it. But it wasn't until 2002, when Yves Saint Laurent released Tom Ford M7 that North America got its first whiff of the mesmerizing scent of oud. In the Middle East, however, its been used for centuries to scent the skin and clothing and burned for incense. Dubbed liquid gold, oud is known as one of the most expensive oils in the world due to its rarity and high demand; less than 2 percent of wild Aquilaria trees produce the aromatic resin, which is secreted to defend against disease-carrying microbes.
