Yamal LNG takes off

The Novatek-led Yamal LNG consortium has launched production at its liquefaction plant on the Yamal peninsula, paving the way for exports to start this week. The first 5.5mn t/yr train at the 17.5mn t/yr Yamal LNG plant started up on 5 December and the first cargo is scheduled to load on 8 December — in the presence of President Vladimir Putin — for project shareholder China’s stateowned CNPC. Novatek chairman and shareholder Leonid Mikhelson this week hailed “the successful start of the project on time and on budget”. The second of three 5.5mn t/yr trains should start up in third-quarter 2018 and the third in January-March 2019. A planned fourth train of 1mn t/yr could be commissioned in late 2019. Yamal LNG groups Novatek with 50.1pc, CNPC and Total each holding 20pc and China’s Silk Road Fund with 9.9pc.
