Pharmacoeconomics in the pharmacy curriculum

We read with interest the letter from Dalia Dawoud (PJ, 6 July 2013, pi 1) regarding lack of attention towards adequate research as well as training in pharmacoeconomics to pharmacy undergraduates in UK schools of pharmacy. We agree that, given the difficult financial climate the NHS is facing, it is imperative that pharmacy graduates have the basic skills to interpret the evidence regarding both the clinical and cost-effective use of medicines, as well as the economic aspects of new pharmacy services. This is also particularly important in light of the public health strategic roles at local and national policy levels that pharmacists are undertaking.
