SCOTLAND celebrated the publication of its national guidance on polypharmacy on 2 November. In a chief executive letter (CEL 36; 2012), the Scottish Government recommends that the guidance is considered for inclusion in all NHS board prescribing action plans. Why are we celebrating? The significance of this publication lies in the speed with which this major multidisciplinary clinical initiative moved from conception to local implementation in NHS Highland and then to national policy across NHS Scotland.
