When Howard Jacobson won this year's Man Booker Prize for fiction, he remarked that the importance of such prizes is that they encourage reading. Reading a wide variety of research is an important way for researchers, clinicians, and policy makers to remain informed, but finding time to do so is difficult. The Lancet paper of the year award encourages reading and reflection across the vast spectrum of health and related disciplines, and provides an opportunity to share the year's best papers with colleagues. The award recognises contributions that are thought likelyto influence future thinking. The judges forthe 2010 Lancet award, as last year, are our readers.
