Amyloid-beta vaccination for Alzheimer's dementia.

Clive Holmes and colleagues report that the amyloid-beta vaccine AN1792 showed evidence of plaque removal in patients with Alzheimer's disease, but did not prevent progressive neuronal degeneration. Nevertheless, Holmes and colleagues suggest that the modified immunisation protocols currently in clinical trials could prove to be safer strategies. Peter St George-Hyslop and John Morris, commenting on their report, suggest that it would be premature to conclude that the vaccine had no effect. They state that further clinical trials are necessary.
